Make Your PS3 Work Overtime

Gaming, Tech

Have you hooked up your PS3 to your computer via Windows Media Player and discovered that some (or most) of your videos won’t play? It’s baffling how one AVI will play yet another isn’t recognized due to some encoding used on the video.

I’ll let you in on a secret: From Boing Boing Gadgets I learned of PS3 Media Server, an open source, free, multi-encoding app that will make virtually any video play on the PS3. I swear to god, it was a one click set up from the download (there are minor tweaks you can do when you dive into the FAQ section – me being on a single core processor). I loaded it, it found the PS3, and it meshed without effort. The info page boasts basic XBox360 support too, but I haven’t tried it yet.

So far, the only file format I found it can’t process is a flat DVD ISO file. It doesn’t process larger files smoothly due to my single core processor (it would either make the screen flicker or would stall out the video as it played) but you can adjust the compression to allow for that but don’t expect TV quality video.

You may thank me with kisses.

I especially love when I step on the balance board and the Wii goes “Oh!” like “OMGYOUWEIGHATON!!!!GETOFFME!!!!!!!”

So, after playing a Wii at a friend’s house, I bought one yesterday, along with the Fit Board. The Fit Board says I’m a colossal fatass. So it’s my new best friend, until I gain it’s love and approval.

I feel your pain. To have a cute inanimate object call you “obese” is so utterly Japanese.

I’m not sure what mkv stands for but all my DS9 episodes are in that format – it’s something about subtitles. In any event, TVVersity wouldn’t play them, but guess what? I tried this one and it works! It has a problem with audio synching and the picture shuddering, but it plays. Much faster than TVVersity, too. Thanks for the tip! 😀

Sean: I dunno what a Mkv file is? “Murder Kill Video”? Look into the comments on the BoingBoing page linked…

Postbear: all you need is some RCA cables and a wish…

Sweet! I did this with mine and it’s VERY handy.

One thing tho – does it play mkv files? My TVersity Media Server doesn’t, but I hear that’s an issue with the PS3 not the media server program.

The one I use was super easy to set up, too. 🙂

CB: no fuss, really. Surprisingly easy

Eric: I’m not allowed to run a wire from office to living room. Ms SharkBoy insists.

    Phronk: how about a mandshake?

I used to use Medialink for this purpose, but it constantly screwed up so I just use a USB flash drive now. Maybe this one will work better. Thanks! I guess I owe you kisses, but I dunno if you want them…I’ve been eating lots of garlic.

I use this app to stream to my PS3 as well. It took a little finagling of some of the settings to get the streaming correct for the majority of my videos, but it works like a charm.

I did go back to a wired connection from my router to my PS3 and my streaming PC and it fixed many of the “hiccup” issues I was seeing.
